What Happens During a Reiki Session

I will be straight with you: Reiki is hard to explain until you have tried it. There is no massage, no pressure, no oil. You lie fully clothed on the treatment table, and I place my hands lightly on or just above different parts of your body. That is it.

What happens next varies from person to person. Some people feel warmth or tingling. Some feel a deep sense of calm. Some do not feel much during the session but notice a difference afterwards: sleeping better, feeling lighter, less anxious. Occasionally, emotions surface, a tightness in the chest that loosens, or a wave of calm that catches you off guard. All of this is normal. I create a safe, unhurried space where whatever your body and mind need to do is welcome.

Reiki Master: What That Means

Reiki training follows three levels. Level 1 is about self-healing. Level 2 allows you to treat others. The Master level is the highest qualification in the Reiki system, requiring advanced study, personal practice, and the ability to teach and attune new practitioners.

I hold the Reiki Master qualification, which makes me one of a small number of practitioners at this level in the Swindon area. My own path to Reiki came through personal experience of illness and recovery, which gives me an understanding that goes beyond the qualification itself. I am not going to make any grand claims about what Reiki can do. What I will say is that the people who book it tend to keep coming back.

Who Reiki Is For

People come to Reiki for all sorts of reasons. Some are dealing with stress or anxiety that feels bigger than the usual pressures of life, and they want something that addresses the emotional weight rather than just the physical symptoms. Others are going through a difficult time: grief, relationship changes, career upheaval, health challenges. Reiki does not promise to fix these things, but a lot of my clients find that sessions help them process what they are feeling and move through it with more clarity.

Then there are the curious ones, people who have heard about Reiki, are not entirely sure what to make of it, and want to try it for themselves somewhere professional and grounded. If you are curious but not sure, that is a perfectly good reason to try it. I welcome sceptics just as warmly as anyone else. It does not require you to believe anything in particular. It just asks that you lie down, close your eyes, and see what you notice.

What Clients Report After Reiki

I am careful not to make claims about what Reiki will do for you, because every person responds differently. What I can share is what clients consistently tell me. Many report sleeping more deeply in the nights following a session, sometimes for the first time in weeks. Others describe a feeling of emotional clarity, as if the noise in their head has been turned down enough to think straight. Physical tension that was not directly addressed, tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, headaches, often eases as a secondary effect of the deep relaxation.

It is worth knowing that Reiki is used alongside conventional medicine in a number of NHS hospitals and hospices across the UK. It is a complementary therapy, which means it supports other treatments rather than replacing them. For clients who are also having massage here, Reiki adds something that physical therapy alone does not quite reach, addressing the stress and emotional patterns that often sit underneath chronic physical tension.

Before Your Session

There is almost nothing you need to do to prepare. You stay fully clothed throughout, so wear whatever is comfortable. I will ask you to take off your shoes and any bulky jewellery, but beyond that, you come as you are.

A note for first-timers: If you have never tried Reiki before, it helps to arrive with an open mind and no firm expectations. Some people feel a lot during their first session; others feel a gentle calm that deepens over the following days. Neither response is better or worse. I will explain everything before the session starts and I am happy to answer any questions, however basic they might seem.

Afterwards, drink plenty of water and try to keep the rest of your day quiet if you can. Some people feel energised; others feel pleasantly sleepy. Both are completely normal. Let your body guide you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everyone experiences it differently. Many people report a gentle warmth or tingling where my hands are placed. Some feel a deep sense of calm that spreads through the body. Others notice emotions surfacing or a feeling of lightness. A few people simply fall asleep, which is perfectly normal. There is no pain, no pressure, and no manipulation of any kind.

Not at all. A lot of my clients book their first session out of curiosity rather than conviction. What matters is being open to the experience and letting yourself relax. Scepticism is completely welcome. I am happy to explain the practice and answer any questions before the session starts.

Reiki is one of the gentlest treatments available. It is non-invasive, involves no physical manipulation, and you stay fully clothed throughout. There are no known side effects. It is safe for people of all ages, including those who are pregnant, recovering from surgery, or managing chronic conditions. It is used alongside conventional medicine in many NHS hospitals and hospices across the UK.

Absolutely. A lot of my clients find that Reiki and massage complement each other really well. Massage addresses physical tension while Reiki works on a more subtle level. I can advise on a combination that suits you. Some people book a massage and a Reiki session back to back; others alternate between the two on different visits.

Reiki training has three levels. Level 1 is about self-healing. Level 2 allows you to treat others. The Master level, which I hold, is the highest qualification in the Reiki system. It involves advanced training in energy work and the ability to teach and attune others to Reiki. There are only a small number of Reiki Masters practising in the Swindon area.
