What to Expect from Your Deep Tissue Massage

This is my most popular treatment, and for good reason. If you have got knots that will not shift, muscles that feel permanently tight, or you have been training hard and your body is letting you know about it, this is the one.

I work into the deeper layers of muscle, not just the surface. It is not about pain (I will always check in with you), but it is firm. Most people describe it as "the good kind of uncomfortable". I use slow strokes, sustained pressure, and targeted techniques to break down knots and tension patterns. Every appointment starts with a quick chat about where you are feeling tightness, so no time gets wasted on areas that do not need attention.

Some people feel an immediate loosening after the session. Others notice the biggest change over the following two or three days as the muscles settle. Either way, most people leave feeling like something has genuinely shifted.

Who Books Deep Tissue Massage

You do not need to be an athlete to benefit from this. If you sit at a desk all day, drive for a living, or just carry your stress in your shoulders (most of us do), deep tissue can make a real difference. That said, I see a lot of gym members from The Grange who train hard and need proper recovery between sessions, runners and cyclists whose muscles need more than foam rolling, and people managing things like sciatica, tension headaches, or stiffness in the neck and shoulders. If you have got a specific problem area that lighter massage has not been able to sort, this is usually the right starting point.

How Deep Tissue Massage Helps

Regular deep tissue work does more than just feel good in the moment. Chronic muscle tension restricts blood flow, compresses nerves, and limits your range of movement in ways you stop noticing because they build up gradually. By working through those problem areas, I can help restore circulation, ease inflammation around compressed joints, and give overworked muscles the chance to properly reset.

A lot of my clients tell me they sleep better after a session, partly because their body is no longer fighting constant tightness. Posture tends to improve over time as the muscles holding you in a hunched or guarded position start to let go. For anyone who trains regularly, deep tissue massage can speed up recovery between sessions and reduce the risk of strain injuries from tight, fatigued muscles.

Before Your Session

Wear whatever is comfortable. You will be asked to undress to your level of comfort, and I use professional draping throughout so only the area being worked on is exposed.

Practical tips: Try not to eat a heavy meal right before. Drink plenty of water before and after. And if you have got any injuries or areas you want me to avoid, just let me know at the start.

After the session, take it easy for the rest of the day if you can. Some mild soreness is normal and usually fades within 24 to 48 hours. You will probably want to drink a lot of water afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

It uses firm pressure that can feel intense, especially on areas of chronic tension. I always check in with you throughout and adjust the pressure to keep it effective without tipping into pain. Some people get a bit of soreness in the day or two afterwards, similar to that feeling after a good workout.

For chronic tension or ongoing issues, a lot of my clients find that fortnightly sessions produce the best results until the problem area improves. After that, a monthly top-up usually keeps things in check. I will chat through what makes sense for you at your first appointment.

Swedish massage uses lighter, flowing strokes and is all about overall relaxation. Deep tissue uses slower, firmer pressure to get into specific areas of chronic tension and muscle knots. If you have got a particular problem area or persistent tightness, deep tissue is usually the better choice. If you want a full-body unwind, Swedish is the one.

Best to avoid anything intense for 24 hours afterwards. Your muscles need time to recover and respond to the work. Light walking or gentle stretching is fine. And drink plenty of water to help your body flush everything through.
